Between Clouds, I, 2003/2004

Curated by Daniela Lorenzi and Mascia Manunza
Exchange project with the collaboration of Italian Cultural Institutes abroad. Italy/Canada/Netherlands.
Italian Cultural Institute in Toronto, Canada
From the press release:
[...]the exhibition installed at the gallery of the Italian Cultural Institute includes, prints, installations and videos. These are artworks of artists Mascia Manunza and Daniela Lorenzi also accompanied by a selection of artists's books created by the Italian atelier.[...]
[...]An interesting comparison that sees traditional printing techniques as the ideal tool for both artists to develop their artistic research, albeit with two very different poetics[...].
[...]Technical knowledge and experimentation create greater freedom, making it possible to find contemporary meaning in ancient techniques such as engraving. Metal, synthetic plates or other materials are used to create the matrices, which are then printed with interpretation and great sensitivity. All the works on display are created using chalcography, woodcut, screen printing or mixed techniques[...].
Carlo Coen, Director Italian Cultural Institute - Toronto writes
For some time now I intended contacting the Studio Grafica Upiglio with whom I had some years ago , a wonderful experience in Melbourne, Australia.
Thanks to Mascia Manunza in Toronto, thanks also to her enthusiasm and her interest, I finally managed some continuity with an idea that went more or less like this: the excellence of Italian artists in the sector of engraving must be made known. It is not a questionof technique, since it is an artistic expression different than a painted work of one created directly on canvas or on paper, with its rules and its character, with its original stamp.
And so this exhibition was born: Daniela Lorenzi, co-owner of "Atelier Quattordici-Grafica Upiglio 22250" one of the top engraving studios in Italy, together with Mascia manunza, two Italian artists resident in Milano and Toronto, Exhibit their works at the Italian Cultural Institute.
The meaning of this initiative, which will be completed by a technical seminar of great significance, is in the encounter of two artists, whom I am pleased to welcome. The importance of their contribution should be seen in relation to their common work, planned together from Milan and Toronto, an encounter the symbolizes the proximity of the two cities.
The public will be able to see with their own eyes the works of Daniela and Mascia in the gallery of the institute; those that will attend the seminar will be able to face the challenges of the engraving technique. This event is certainly an important moment for the contemporary Italian art in Toronto and the Italian Cultural Institute is proud to have promoted the event.
