A bridge between two cultural worlds
Novas Imagems. Milano - São Paulo came about after a first successful exhibition experiment in 1998, from the wish of Daniela Lorenzi and Helena Freddi to build an increasingly active bridge of exchange between two cultural worlds: the Italian one, with its important artistic and craft tradition, and the Brazilian one, very interested in experimentation and in mixing the different artistic and humanistic disciplines.
1998 Atelier 14, artists in residence
For over a month Brazilian and Italian artists are guests in the spaces of Corso san Gottardo in Milan for a residency. Their urgent aim is to produce a collective edition that gives value to each individual artist, while showing how contemporary original printmaking needs to expand from a two-dimensional into a three-dimensional dimension. The fruitful exchange, the experimentation and the dialogue on both technical and poetic levels led to the creation of Meridiani Meridianos, a portfolio with 10 intaglio images, 1 woodcut and 1 lithograph.
An installation spread across all the rooms of the gallery, in which sheets printed from plates made with traditional techniques sit alongside more experimental works with a more sculptural character, or elements that interact with the space.
Under the patronage of IBRIT, the Consulate General of Brazil and the Italian Cultural Institute in São Paulo
The initiative, which won the support of the institutions, is developed overseas as part of a wider project.
In 1999 the Centro Cultural São Paulo devotes an entire floor of its large spaces to an exhibition of small, medium and large-format original prints by the same artists, accompanied by the edition Meridiani Meridianos. In the same year the exhibition moves to the Muna, Museu Universitario de Arte, Uberlandia, Brazil.
2000 Centro per l'arte contemporanea Venti Correnti
In 2000 the exhibition returns to Italy under the name Incisione contemporanea: Milano - San Paolo, opening the spaces of the Galleria Venti Correnti in Milan, which opens with very successful press coverage handled by IBC Irma Bianchi comunicazione.
Centro Cultural São Paulo: acquisition and exhibition
Also in 2000, the Centro Cultural São Paulo, Brazil, having acquired the portfolio, shows a selection from it in an event devoted to its permanent collection.
