A female archetype
Inspired by the work of Linda Nochilin, feminist and art critic, the project sets out to question the female visual imaginary and how it is structured. Object/Subject a bout representing women by Carlotta Origoni consists of a series of prints which, once folded, become small editions. Each issue of the series is dedicated to a female archetype and plays with a well-known representation of women in the history of art. Each topos is paired with a counterpart - a woman “in action” - this time drawn from the world of recent photography. Each issue therefore plays with the free superimposition of a pair of images and with the discovery of the new hybrid figures that these superimpositions can create.
A digital version and a limited edition
A work that began as free experimentation and took its definitive form with the invited participation in the exhibition Extra- Bold, design for social justice at the Arts & Innovation Center, Millville, New Jersey, in the United States. There are two versions of this series of prints/book: a digital version - Indigo, printed at Officina Grafica, and a limited edition produced by A14 and printed on hand presses.
Linda Nochlin – Women, art and power
The question of whether it is possible for a woman, at this point in history, to enjoy the female nude in a simple and unproblematic way inevitably leads us to the question of whether any “positive” visual representation of woman is possible at all.
