The book and the two images

Artist's book printed in Gumprint and made in three unique copies.

Conceived with dual authorship, it is accompanied by two images, printed digitally as Giclée, the same ones that were used to develop the pages of the book.

A unique body of work presented as a multimedia installation.

Technique and poetics

Technically it is the toner, the greasy substance deposited on the paper surface, that makes it possible, when printing in Gumprint, to apply a procedure similar to traditional lithography. The paper, even when prepared, remains an ephemeral surface that deteriorates easily in contact with water.

This limitation is what made it possible to repeat, with a controlled variability in terms of print quality, a different series of the same image.

The subtraction of information and the rendering of a certain kind of atmosphere and memory are the combinations on which the whole edition plays. A technical choice that, together with the particular choice of binding, helps to amplify the meaning of the threshold and the reflection on the concept of place.

Case and binding

The case is made of Plexiglas and is open on both sides.
The cover has two spines, each bearing the title and the name of one of the two authors.

On sliding the book out and opening it, the two sewn spines allow it to be leafed through in both directions, following an alternating rhythm from left to right and vice versa.

Through this alternation of reading and movement between blank and printed pages, a third space is physically defined: the place where borders dissolve, are redefined and change continuously. The in-between, as Kaori Miyayama calls it.

The exhibitions

The edition, included in the solo exhibition project La dimensione Nascosta by Kaori Miyayama in 2011, was born as the synthesis of a dialogue on themes of common interest, during the period of research and print preparation for the project itself.

Participation in the public event SP Stampa 2012 in São Paulo, Brazil, allowed a further, more in-depth development.

Through the presentation of Ti aspetto fuori, together with a series of workshops and lectures, it was also possible to form a research group between art and anthropology, to open a reflection on the concept of place, on the meaning of the border and on cultural differences.
