Nuvola da Viaggio. A Slice of Sky, 2003

Mascia Manunza
Residence. Limited edition prints. exchange project.
A book, a video and a portable limited edition
The Italian artist, now living in Canada, has created a series of works that reflect on the theme of clouds. A body of work conceived by Mascia Manunza, in the occasion of the exchange project Between Clouds, I. Organized by Atelier Quattordici - Grafica Upiglio 22250, with a sponsorship by Italian di Cultural Institute has been presented in Toronto, as well as in Montreal, Canada, in Amsterdam, Netherlands finishing in Milan, Italy with a solo show of the artist.
Inside Derbylius Gallery was installed: a video, an artist's book and a portable limited edition print.
Originally sign and design
Both limited edition publications, published by the atelier, were designed and produced during the artist's residency in Italy.
Starting with the choice of matrices, everything revolves around the use of polymer surfaces and experimental techniques. Even the case for the leporello A Slice of Sky is custom-made with a special hot-moulded plexiglass shape.
A Slice of Sky
It is a three-metre-long leporello, preserved in a transparent plexiglass case.
It can be consulted turning the pages as a book and accompanied by an inserted classification of clouds printed on a translucent paper, or it can be read and installed in a space open along its entire length to simulate a portion or a slice of sky.

Technique: Drypoint on opaline veralite P.E.T.G. based on polyester modified with solvents. Colour poupée inking. Serigraphy interventions with the collaboration of EllepiKappa.
Format: folded 35 x 35 cm Leporello 3metres
Paper: Hahnemühle white 300 gr.
Edition: 26 copies: 21 in arabic numerals, numbered from 1 to 21 and 5 copies in roman numbers, numbered from I to V
Typography: Rodolfo Campi
Publisher: Atelier Quattordici-Grafica Upiglio 22250
Printmaker: Lorenzi Daniela with Mascia Manunza and Maria Grmas with the presses of Atelier Quattordici-Grafica Upiglio 22250
The classification of clouds
A slice of sky is Mascia Manunza's multimedia response on how it is possible, to crystallize and take possession through drawings, prints, video stills and 'design' of a "slice of sky."
The book. A slice of sky: original intaglio print, a strip of sky over 3 meters long folded and kept inside a transparent plexiglas box. Barely perceptible shapes are disturbed
by the insertion of letters and symbols taken from an early 19th century cloud classification system; scattered across the pages they float without horizon in an attempt to describe and fix an ever-changing nature.

Nuvola da viaggio
Nuvola da Viaggio - Travelling Cloud, Shopping Bag - is a printed sheet, folded and creased.

Inchiostrazione a poupèe a colori. Linoleum sagomato stampato a un colore.
Carta: Hahnemühle 300 g
Formato: 80 x 120 cm
Tiratura: 5 p.d.a
Editore: Atelier Quattordici-Grafica Upiglio 22250
Stampa: Daniela Lorenzi e Mascia Manunza
il video
Video. The animated short film Cloud is a stream created by the union of a series of still images, of single frames: to see the movement of the clouds, one must stop, allow oneself long times. The evolution of the clouds, their swelling with rain and electricity, is accompanied by Canadian musician, composer David Occhipinti's music conceived as a concentration of “metallic, electrical interference” arising from the overlapping sounds processed electronically. If the book develops, fluidizes the visual journey in a continuum without interruption, without pause, the video proceeds in the opposite direction, framing, determining, fixing, going in the opposite direction to what is normally the moving image of this medium.
